This 5-day course is filled with a variety of helpful information starting with a review of the responsibilities for managing radiation safety in a hospital. We spend minimal time reviewing atomic structure and radioactivity before investigating the pertinent regulations to assist you in performing your job. We discuss real-world applications and suggestions for external and internal radiation protection are offered in detail. The remaining days are packed with practical information including discussions of real world experiences on a variety of topics relevant to medical radiation safety. For those individuals looking for refresher training on medical radiation safety, this course is designed with you in mind. Course Content
Practical KnowledgeThis is not a course about theory. We emphasize practical knowledge for implementing a good radiation safety program at a reasonable cost and how to assure successful radiation safety inspections. Each student will receive extensive reference materials including a specially designed Medical Radiation Safety Manual that includes relevant Federal regulations and selected set of Regulatory Guides as well as a certificate of course completion. Liquid Scintillation Counting OptionStudents selecting this option (additional $200 fee required) will complete an additional four hours of course work on the fundamentals of liquid scintillation counting (LSC). The objective of this class is to provide students with a basic understanding of the principles of liquid scintillation counting for analysis of surface swipes, biomedical, environmental, waste and other types of samples. This module is conducted at the end of the course on Friday afternoon. DOT HAZMAT Certification OptionStudents selecting this option (additional $200 fee required) will complete an additional four hours of course work on shipping and receiving of radioactive materials. This class is designed to train workers in the requirements of the DOT as specified by 49 CFR 172 Subpart H and the NRC as specified by 10 CFR 71.5 and 10 CFR 20.1906. This module is conducted at the end of the regular RSO course on Friday afternoon and will conclude with an examination. Students who successfully complete the exam will receive an additional certificate documenting this training. |
